You are allowed to do it for the money.

An Instagram post from my #FOT Courtney Donahue-Foster

You are allowed to do it for the money.

Another #FOT (Friend of Ted) that I love to follow on Instagram is Courtney Donahue Foster (@courtney.and.company). I love her insights so much I’ve even hired her!

She shared a great Instagram post about the dreaded “M” word.  Not marriage, but MONEY.

Why is it that many of us, me included, make excuses about wanting to make money?

After reading Courtney’s post, my perspective shifted.

I will let her tell the rest of her story (courtesy of her Instagram page)….

You're allowed just to do it for the money. 😉 Not that you needed my permission, but there it is anyway. There are so many great reasons to build a business, and I'm a fan of pretty much all of them...Helping people...Making an impact...Giving back to your community...Building a legacy...Being an example to younger generations...Serving people with your talents...Yep, ALL good things.Another good thing? Doing it for the money.Yet ""doing it for the money"" gets such a bad rap.In the last week alone, I've heard from students of mine: "Well, more money would be good, but I don't want to get too greedy, we're making enough" and "I just want to replace my 9-5 income. That would be enough" and "I shouldn't just do something for the money, I probably need a bigger 'why.'"But... why? When money can be this powerful tool that can do amazing things, why do we treat the goal of making more money as if it's less worthy than all the other goals? (Well, I *know* why, but it's deeper than what I can get into in an Instagram post, and that's not the point here.)When you do it for the money—when you have more money—you have more options. More choices. More resources.Resources that bring financial security, peace of mind, stability.Resources that provide comfort, fun, even luxury.Resources that keep you fed, sheltered, and clothed.Resources that build a legacy, help a community, start a movement.Resources that can be given away generously.Resources that can fight generational poverty, systemic racism, systemic too-many-things-to-name.From where I stand, "doing it for the money" is the stuff. So, this business thing? I think I'll just do it for the money. 😉
